Suddenly He Looked 10x More Legit
The simplest fix that increased an author's book sales
Hello, it's Jake
I was working with an author who was looking to increase his online sales.
"Go ahead, try looking it up."
He typed his name into Google.
Then the exact title of his book.
Nothing.
No website. No clear place to buy it. No online presence that actually helped readers find him. There was an oddly specific way he had to type the book name into the search engine in order to get the website to pop up in the results, and you had to scroll down to see it.
This was quite the problem…
Because if people can't find your book online…
They can't buy it.
A book people liked but couldn't find.
The author already had some success. Friends, family, and people in his community had bought the book and recommended it to others.
But nearly all of his sales were happening locally.
When people outside that circle tried to look him up online, they ran into a problem: his website.
Technically, he had one. It was a basic unfinished GoDaddy site. It looked outdated, didn't explain the books well, and was difficult to navigate. Frankly, it was so disastrous that it actually hurt his credibility. I'll never forget the pixelated slideshow at the top of the homepage.
The website is supposed to build credibility.
At one point he said something that summed up the entire issue.
"People always ask me how to buy my book... I end up giving it to them in person"
Imagine if you had to ask J.K. Rowling how to get a copy of Harry Potter?
That's when the real problem became obvious.
This wasn't a writing problem. Apparently, the book was phenomenal according to the people who had actually read it.
It was a visibility problem.
The Fix? We rebuilt the website from the ground up.
Instead of trying to make something flashy or complicated, we focused on making it clear, functional, and easy to navigate.
The design was built to match the tone of his post-apocalyptic story. Darker colors, bold typography, and a layout that felt immersive without being cluttered.
Visitors land on the site, immediately understand what the book is about, and as they scroll, they quickly reach both books with clear links to the Amazon purchase pages.
No confusion. No hunting around. Just a simple path from interest to purchase.
Behind the scenes, we also implemented basic SEO improvements:
- Clean page structure
- Optimized titles and metadata
- Proper indexing for the author's name and book titles
- Clear navigation for search engines and users
Now when someone searches for the author or his books, the website actually appears.
Which sounds obvious. But before, it didn't.
The result?
Once the new site went live, something started happening.
People could finally: find the author online, understand the books quickly, and buy them without friction.
And when you remove friction from the process, sales naturally increase.
There was no massive marketing campaign and no big advertising budget.
Just a website that finally did its job.
A lot of people think a website needs to be flashy, complex, or full of features.
In reality, most businesses and authors need just three things:
- Be easy to find
- Be easy to understand
- Be easy to buy from
When those three things are in place, everything else becomes easier.
Even selling books online.
So if you want to increase your visibility online, my team and I work with (mostly local) businesses that want to do better than they're doing now. If that's you, let's get in touch and see if we're a good match.
P.S. He gave me a copy of his book. I read it and it was indeed phenomenal.
